Today, December 2, 2024, the Electoral Commission (EC) launched the nationwide Special Voting exercise, allowing media professionals, election officials, and security personnel to cast their ballots ahead of the general election on December 7. However, a ballot recall in the Western and Eastern Regions, originally scheduled for 328 centers, led to a rescheduling of the exercise in those regions for Thursday, December 5, 2024.
While the voting exercise proceeded smoothly in most areas, an incident in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency sparked controversy. John Dumelo, the parliamentary candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the constituency, condemned his rival, Lydia Alhassan, the current Member of Parliament (MP), for distributing food to voters during the special voting exercise. Dumelo alleged that this was an attempt to sway voters and stated that he could have done far worse if he had chosen to.
In response, Lydia Alhassan defended her actions in an interview on UTV, explaining that there was nothing wrong with providing food to voters who were hungry and thirsty. She insisted that her gesture was simply an act of kindness and that it had no ulterior motive.
