The chaos at Asene Akroso occurred during the special voting exercise, where tensions flared between supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The NDC parliamentary candidate accused the local NPP chairman of distributing money to influence voters. This led to physical confrontations, with reports of injuries and allegations that some police officers were complicit in the violence.
The NDC claims that their supporters were attacked, and one member was pepper-sprayed while lodging a complaint at the police station. Meanwhile, the NPP denied the accusations, arguing that the NDC’s claims were a strategy to deflect attention from their anticipated electoral defeat in the constituency.
