Afia Pokua: ‘Otumfuo Scandal’ Boosted My Fame and Opened New Opportunities

Ghanaian media personality Afia Pokua, popularly known as Vim Lady, has shared how a highly publicized controversy surrounding her remarks about the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, unexpectedly propelled her career to new heights. The incident began when Afia, then a journalist at Agoo TV, publicly questioned the monarch’s perceived silence during tribal tensions between the Ashantis and Bonos. Her critique sparked widespread backlash, with some accusing her of disrespecting the revered Asantehene.

Despite the criticism and public protests, Afia chose to focus on the silver lining. In a recent interview, she revealed that the controversy brought her a level of visibility she had never anticipated. “The exposure was beyond my imagination. I gained fame, popularity, and connections that opened new doors,” she said. She recounted how a traditional chief, previously unknown to her, invited her to be the master of ceremonies at his event, illustrating how her network has expanded due to the incident.

The situation intensified when Afia was summoned to the Manhyia Palace, where her apology was rejected, and she was labeled “cursed” by some elders. However, Afia remains unfazed. “I don’t believe in curses from humans. I trust in God’s plan for my life,” she asserted, emphasizing her unwavering faith and resilience.

Rather than allowing the negative aspects of the scandal to define her, Afia has embraced the opportunities it has presented. “I’ve learned to turn challenges into stepping stones,” she added, showcasing her determination to continue thriving in Ghana’s media landscape.
